WIND GOM-GOM

J'ai conçu le "Wind Gom-Gom" à partir de la Goura que m'avait offert Uli WAHL. Uli a découvert cet instrument dans divers vieux livres et il l'a analyser puis précisement décrit dans son site web bien connu. Cet instrument africain est un instrument à corde soufflée par la bouche du musicien. Gom-Gom est un autre nom désignant la Goura. Le Wind Gom-Gom dérive de la Goura et est donc un instrument composite entre la harpe éolienne et l'arc musical éolien : une courte partie de la corde est un ruban (fin ruban métalique : ruban de mètre à mesurer, 50 cm de long, 5 mm de large) et la plus longue partie est un fil (fil inox 0.3 mm, 1 m de long). Cette corde composite est fixée à une canne rigide de 3 m de long. Le dispositif bas de fixation de la corde inox sera équipé d'un système de tension de celle-ci. Le vent soufflant sur le ruban provoque une vibration de celui-çi et par conséquent du fil inox aussi. Un résonateur amplifie la vibration : je préfère une calebasse équipée d'une peau naturelle pour filtrer au mieux les basses. Un petit trou est percé dans le milieu de la membrane pour y passer le fil de transmission (fil à coudre en coton rigide); un bout de ce fil est passé par le trou et terminé par un noeud; l'autre extrémité est attachée au fil inox; le fil doit être mis légèrement sous tension pour transmettre la vibration du fil inox à la membrane. Le Wind Gom-Gom produit un son bas, propice à la méditation , beaucoup plus bas que les autres instruments éoliens. Il démarre avec un vent faible à médium et supporte les turbulences.

I had designed the "Wind Gom-Gom" from the Goura instrument that Uli WAHL had given me. Uli had discovered the Goura in different old books and he had analysed this instrument then precisely described it in his famous web site. The African Goura instrument is a stringed music instrument which is blown by the musician's mouth. Gom-Gom is an other name of the Goura. The Wind Gom-Gom is derived from the Goura. It's a compound instrument between the aeolian harp and the aeolian musical bow : a short part of the string is a ribbon (thin metal ribbon used for meter measure, 50 cm long, 5 mm wide) and the long part is a stainless metal thread (fishing stainless metal thread, 0.3 mm section, about 1 m long). This compound string is fixed to a 3 meter high rigid bamboo pole. A mechanism lets the tension of the composite ribbon. The wind blowing on the ribbon causes a vibrating of it and therefore of the thread too. A resonator amplifies the vibration : I prefer a calebass with a natural skin as membrane in order to filter the bass tone. A small hole is bored in the middle of the membrane for inserting the transmission thread (rigid coton for sewing) ; one end of the thread is put through the membrane and is ended by a knot ; the other end of the thread is attached to the stainless metal string ; this thread must be put under tension, a little bit, to transmit the vibration from the nylon line to the membrane. The Wind Gom-Gom produces a bass sound, excellent for meditation, more bass than the other aeolian instruments. It needs a light-medium wind to start the vibration and it tolerates turbulences.
